Jesse McCartney performed before a clutch of adoring (mostly young female) fans at Revolution Live in Ft. Lauderdale on Aug. 5. He was here in eager anticipation of his new album, due out on July 22. In Technicolor is McCartney's first studio album in four years, and the first under his own label.

Both of the big releases from the new album were a big hit with the audience, and showed a new level of maturity in his music, which is appropriate since he is far from being a teenager now at 27.  It's hard to believe his forst solo LP was 11 years ago, and he did the smash hit on that effort, Beautiful Soul, whiuch everyone sang along to. His new single, My Girl is Superbad, is lightyears away from that early effort:

My girl's a super sonic sex machine
She'll put the technicolor in your screen
Yeah, she's a super psychedelic dream
My girl is super, super, superbad.

His new ballad, The Other Guy, was done while he worked the keyboard. Expressing his angst at being the other guy in a relationship, it shows a new sophistication in his music. Both Superbad and Other Guy are excellent songs and will get him back on the charts. The picture with this article, of him kneeling, came from a performance of It's Over from his third album. He also reached back to the first album with a fine rendition of She's No You.

But it is clearly this fourth album he is relying on to jumpstart his career. "My proudest musical moment is with this record," he told the audience. He performed the song So Cool, which is only on the album available at Target stores. They "wanted an exclusive" he said, a method used by Target with other artists to get customers to buy their music there.

McCartney said he "has the best fans in the world. They are the heartbeat of this career."
