This week, the Senate has a chance to take a huge step forward on energy efficiency -- saving taxpayer money, reducing greenhouse emissions, and creating hundreds of thousands of jobs at the same time -- by passing the bipartisan Shaheen-Portman Energy Efficiency Act.

But we might not get the chance. Extremist Republicans are doing all they can to slow up or take down this important legislation.

That's unacceptable and wrong, so I'm joining with the bill's author, Senator Jeanne Shaheen, and my Senate colleagues Chris Coons, Kirsten Gillibrand, Mark Pryor, Mark Warner and Mark Udall to call on Congress to come together and pass this strong bipartisan bill right away.

Will you help us pass bipartisan energy efficiency legislation by signing our petition to Congress today?

Unfortunately, as Republicans in the Senate continue to cater more and more to Tea Party extremists, it has become almost impossible to put together strong, bipartisan legislation to confront the huge challenges we face.

That is particularly true when it comes to ending our addiction to fossil fuels.

That's why I was so pleased with the Shaheen-Portman legislation promoting energy efficiency -- which will be a major step forward in the fight against climate change -- and why I was so disappointed that obstructionists in the Republican Party who are insisting on doing everything they can to stop this important reform.

This is a strong bill. We can't allow ideologues to stop the best chance we've had in years to make major progress on one of the greatest challenge of our generation. We need your help today to stop them.

Join Senators Shaheen, Coons, Gillibrand, Pryor, Udall, Warner, and me in calling on Congress to stop playing games and pass Shaheen-Portman right away!

This bill will save consumers and taxpayers money, grow jobs, and help end our reliance on coal and oil. Hawaii's future and our children's future is directly threatened by our addiction to dirty energy. Inaction is no longer an option.

Your signature today will help me show Congress that we will not accept leaders who ignore the threats we face. Thank you for making your voice heard.

Brian Schatz
U.S. Senator
